Why should your loved one have an obituary?

An obituary is more than an announcement. Lora Baker shares her perspective on why writing an obituary is such a meaningful part of remembering your loved one.

From celebrating who they were to helping friends and family find comfort and connection, an obituary serves a purpose far beyond words on a page.

Today we’re shining the spotlight on Shelby Morgan, our Funeral Apprentice at Sanders. Shelby is currently furthering her education as she works toward becoming a Funeral Director/Embalmer.

When Shelby isn’t at the funeral home, life is full and busy in the best way. As a mom of four, most of her time is spent with her kids, but she also loves thrifting, going to concerts, browsing plant shops, and camping whenever she can.

Originally from Dover, Shelby appreciates the small-town feel of the area, especially after spending years in Oklahoma City. Being back in Kingfisher County means close connections, a tight-knit community, and time near family, things she values deeply.

Creativity plays a big role in Shelby’s life. If she hadn’t followed her calling to become a Funeral Director, she would have pursued architecture. She enjoys drafting and designing small spaces.

What Shelby values most in her work is getting to truly know the families she serves. She believes personal connection matters, and that compassion and genuine care can make a meaningful difference during difficult times.

This line of work has taught Shelby to never take life for granted. She believes in making every day count, appreciating the small moments, and fully embracing life. With a background in childcare, Shelby has always felt drawn to caring for others and it shows.

We’re grateful to have Shelby as part of the Sanders team and community.
