Ruth, a registered nurse at Sycamore Shoals Hospital, has turned past Marsh Regional Blood Center blood drive T-shirts into a beautiful tradition.

For the last three years, she has handcrafted a quilt from these shirts to be raffled among our Ballad Health team members who donate during the October blood drive.

This year’s lucky winner is Patty from Sycamore Shoals Hospital’s surgical services! Patty has been a faithful donor for many years, and we are so grateful for her ongoing commitment to helping save lives. ❤️

✨Donor spotlight ✨

Michael, known to his students as OD, has been teaching at UVA Wise for nearly 60 years, but he’s been rolling up his sleeve to save lives even longer. He started at just 16 years old in Pennsylvania, inspired by his parents. Though nervous at his first donation, OD quickly realized how impactful one small act could be. From then on, donating became a lifelong habit.

Now, at 83 years old, he has donated on four continents: Australia, Europe, North America, and Asia. OD has given well over 500 units of blood, platelets, and plasma throughout his lifetime.

For OD, donating is about more than numbers, it’s about living his life with purpose and service.

“I give blood because people need it. Only about 5% of people who can donate actually do. My whole life is about helping people, so donating blood is just another way I can do that next to teaching.”

He has a standing appointment every first Friday of the month to donate plasma, making the trip from Southwest Virginia worth it every time.

“It’s a momentary stick for a huge impact on others.” ❤️

OD is proof that one person’s dedication can change countless lives.
