In honor of the recent holiday…💚🇮🇪
Meet URI kinesiology student Delaney Sullivan 👣💙
Balancing science and dance, Delaney is making moves both in the lab and on the world stage. A dedicated Irish step dancer, she recently competed at the World Championships—while also leading innovative research comparing ballet dancers and Irish step dancers performing en pointe.
Her work aims to uncover key differences in injury risk and training needs across dance styles, helping keep performers stronger and safer. 🩰
Recognized for her impact, Delaney was awarded the Undergraduate Research Award to support her study—just one more step in an already incredible journey!!

The University of Rhode Island’s National Biomechanics Day will welcome nearly 500 students from 12 high schools across Rhode Island on Wednesday, April 8, 2026!

Students will explore biomechanics and kinesiology through more than 25 hands-on demonstrations and interactive competitions held in Mackal Field House. Featured stations include motion capture, augmented and virtual reality, wearable technology, and more.

This year’s event has been in planning since early summer of last year, led by Dr. Susan D’Andrea and second-year master’s student Kylie McPhee.

With the support of URI Kinesiology, undergraduate and graduate students in the biomechanics group have worked extensively to create an engaging, innovative, and impactful STEM outreach experience that celebrates biomechanics and related fields.

If you are interested in volunteering, please scan the QR code on the final slide. For additional information, contact kylie_mcphee@uri.edu.

Happy National Biomechanics Day! 🦵⚙️🏃

The 3MT® competition challenges graduate students to present their research in just three minutes, using only one static slide—making complex ideas clear, engaging, and accessible to a general audience. It’s a true test of both research impact and communication skills!

Melissa’s presentation, “Red Light, Green Light: Rethinking How We Screen for REDs in Female Athletes,” highlights innovative work happening right here in Kinesiology.

📅 Thursday, March 26
⏰ 6–8 PM

Meet Matthew Mitchell! 👋
Matt is a kinesiology intern in outpatient cardiac rehab in East Greenwich. He works alongside nurses and exercise physiologists to support patients recovering from events such as heart attacks, bypass surgery, stent procedures, and more. He is part of the Dean Ornish Intensive Cardiac Rehab Program. His role includes monitoring vital signs, guiding individualized exercise sessions, assisting with patient intakes, and contributing to nutrition education—including a hands-on cooking demo for participants.
He plays a key part in helping design and progress safe, effective exercise prescriptions based on each patient’s initial stress test and ongoing responses. One of the most rewarding aspects of his internship has been watching each 9-week cohort grow closer and support one another, highlighting the powerful mental and emotional side of recovery.

Matthew is supervised by Kayla Mahoney, a fellow URI alum, making this experience even more meaningful as he works toward his goal of becoming a physical therapist.🩵🐏

Meet Haley Forbes, a second-year Ph.D. student in Kinesiology at URI, mentored by Dr. Nicole Logan. 💙 Alongside her studies, she works as a Clinical Exercise Physiologist at Hasbro Children’s Hospital’s Pediatric Heart Center, helping children with congenital heart disease (CHD) safely improve their fitness and quality of life. 🫀
In the Logan Lab, Haley’s research explores how physical activity and fitness support brain health and mental well-being in youth and special populations—including those with ADHD, anxiety, TBI, CHD, and menopausal women. Her goal: to bridge clinical exercise physiology and pediatric research to design exercise programs that strengthen both heart and brain health. 💪🧠
