As we commemorate my company's remarkable one-year milestone, I would like to share my mother’s story because she is the reason I do what I do!
In the 1990s, my mother, Sharon, selflessly dedicated herself to caring for others as a certified nursing assistant at a nursing home, where she forged unbreakable bonds with her patients. However, her life took a profound turn when a work-related injury resulted in severe back damage, leaving her with multiple slipped discs.
At a time when painkillers were frequently prescribed, she was assured of their safety. For many years, she managed her pain with medication, but as time progressed, her health began to unravel. When I was three years old, shortly after my brother's birth, my mother's health issues intensified.
Doctors struggled to diagnose her condition, but eventually, in the early 2000s, she was diagnosed with Addison's disease and started steroid treatments. Despite this, her health continued to decline, and she was frequently hospitalized all of my childhood for her chronic conditions while simultaneously battling dependence on pain medication.
Tragically, in 2008, her doctor prescribed fentanyl patches since she began having issues taking oral pain medication due to vomiting, but on May 24, 2008, she accidentally overdosed on fentanyl by placing a second patch on without removing the first, and we lost her.
Watching my mother bravely battle chronic pain, addiction, and autoimmune conditions taught me invaluable lessons. The opioid epidemic claimed countless lives, including my mother's. Yet, in the midst of tragedy, I found purpose. I started Miracles By Hand to make a difference in the lives of others struggling with chronic pain and conditions, just like my mother.
My mission is to heal others because I couldn't heal my mother, to make a difference, and to honor her legacy!
Rest in peace to my amazing mother, Sharon Ann Bogumil Cheskiewicz, loved dearly and missed every single day!
