Life Reflections

On March 14, 2026, Mitchell Planter Jr. entered into eternal rest at McLeod Hospital in Florence, South Carolina.
Mitchell Planter Jr., known to all as “Daddy Crab,” was a loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.

Mitchell Planter Jr. was born on October 14, 1950, to Mitchell Planter Sr. and Elouise Planter, in Florence, South Carolina. At an early age, he moved to Ithaca, New York, where he lived for many years before returning home to South Carolina.
For many years, he worked as a construction foreman in New York, where he was known for his strong work ethic and dedication to providing for his family.

Mitchell Planter Jr. was one of several siblings. His greatest passions were spending time with family, laughing with loved ones, and being there for those who meant the most to him.

Mitchell Planter Jr. leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, LaTonya Dean; one grandson, Godfrey Ligas of Garfield, New Jersey; his brother, Jimmy (Amy) Planter; and his sister, Louise Planter of Florence, South Carolina.
He also leaves behind special nieces and nephews: Valerie (Robert) Davis, Jimmy (Ernestine) Planter, Jesiah Planter and Debbie Planter all of Florence, South Carolina; Charlotte (Jermaine) Clarke of Charleston, South Carolina; Richard (Dr. Keturah) Planter of St. Stephen, South Carolina; and Quaneesha Thompson of Fayetteville, North Carolina; along with a host of other family and friends who will cherish his memory.

Mitchell Planter Jr. was preceded in death by his parents, Mitchell and Elouise Planter; and his two brothers, Leroy Planter and Ronnie Planter.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Faith Nursing Home of Florence, South Carolina, for the love, care, and compassion shown to Mitchell during his time there.

He will be truly missed, but his love, laughter, and memories will live on forever in the hearts of those who loved him. 💛

Obituary

For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me… The King will reply, “I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers or mine, you did for me.” Matthew 25:34-36, 40

Howard Edwards, Jr., son of the late Howard Edwards, Sr. and Eula McCullough Edwards, was born on May 22, 1957, in Kingstree South Carolina, alongside his twin brother, Herman Edwards. On Friday,March 13, 2026, he peacefully answered the Master’s call and entered into eternal rest.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his fraternal twin brother Herman Edwards, and his sister, Luttie Bell Swindler.Howard was a lifelong faithful member of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, where he served faithfully and diligently as Trustee Chairperson until his health failed. He was a proud graduate of St.Mark High School, Class of 1975, and later attended Voorhees College in Denmark, South Carolina.

Howard was a man blessed with many talents and skills. He mastered various trades, including carpentry, plumbing, construction, and other technical crafts. He had a natural gift for numbers and enjoyed working with mathematics. Those who knew him often heard his favorite saying, “I am smarter than a 5 th grader.”

Howard was known as a praying man who loved God, his family, and his church. He enjoyed spending time outdoors fishing and hunting and he was also known to be a wonderful cook. More than anything, Howard loved people and had a heart for helping others. If he saw someone in need and could help, he would not hesitate to lend a hand.

He leaves to cherish his loving memory his devoted and loving wife, Rev. Joyce M. Edwards; two daughters, Dorothy Morris of Florence, SC, and Evon Edwards of Andrews, SC; four sons, Jamon (Latoya) Johnson of Culpeper, VA, Christopher (Charketia M.) Edwards of Kingstree, SC, Maurice (LaQuilla) McClary of Columbia, SC, and Howard Quentin Edwards, III of Kingstree, SC.

He is also survived by four sisters; Elizabeth (Lee) Fleming and Joeretta (Dan) Nowlin, of Kingstree, SC,
Asalee Zellars, and Lula Mae Green, both of Charleston, SC.

Howard leaves a lasting legacy through his twenty grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and a host
of nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends who will cherish his life, love, and memory.
