Journaling isn’t just about writing, it’s an opportunity to slow down, breathe, and listen to what your soul’s been trying to tell you.
I call it the Four B’s of journaling. A simple way to remember how putting pen to paper can bring peace and healing.

🧠 B for Brain – Writing awakens both sides of your brain using logic and creativity to help bring focus to thoughts and emotions. It brings meaning to the messages in our mind and gives your story a voice.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Rom.12:2

🌉 B for Bridge – Each page becomes a bridge between your head and your heart, connecting what you know with what you feel. Journaling helps us slow down long enough to see what’s true. It allows us to notice the narratives we tell ourselves about ourselves, the stories that are shaped by fear, anxiety, trauma, or loss. Writing helps us identify cognitive distortions and replace them with a new perspective. It bridges the space between the heart and the mind, helping them to align to what is true.

Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.
Psalm 139:23-24

🫁B for Body – As you write, your body relaxes as it releases the tension of what it has been repressing. Your heart rate slows down, your breath deepens, and your nervous system becomes more regulated and calm. Studies show that expressive journaling helps to strengthen the immune system by reducing stress and supporting the parasympathetic nervous system state. Journaling helps your body go from running to rest.

A sound heart rate is life to the body,
But envy is rottenness to the bones. Prov. 24:30

❤️ B for Blessings – writing helps reflection turn into gratitude. You begin to see how God has been present, even in the quiet places. It allows us to sit in the stillness and sacred places to once again hear His voice. It’s where your story becomes your breakthrough , and your breakthrough becomes your blessing.

Then the Lord replied: ‘Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it. For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Hab. 2:2

I invite you to write deep and reflect even deeper! The journey to healing isn’t always an easy one, but it is a journey worth taking.

After a traumatic event or a traumatic life, survivors might have only a very fragmented narrative of what happened or no clear story at all. Many survivors say, “I don’t remember anything,” without realizing that they are remembering when they suddenly startle, feel afraid, tighten up, pull back, feel shame or self-hatred, or start to tremble.

Because trauma is remembered emotionally and somatically more than it is remembered in a narrative form that can be expressed verbally, survivors often feel confused, overwhelmed, or crazy. Without a memory in words or pictures, they do not recognize what they are feeling as memory.

Most people are unaware of all these different ways of remembering, even though they are all too familiar with the experience of suddenly getting anxious or angry for no apparent reason. When they are triggered, they do not realize that what they are experiencing is a memory. They know the warm feeling that is connected to thinking about loved ones or the pulling back or bracing that occurs when they encounter someone who feels threatening.
