👁 Seeing Spots or Strings in Your Vision?
These “floaters” are often harmless, caused by natural changes in the eye’s gel-like vitreous. But a sudden increase or new floaters—especially with flashes of light or vision loss—can signal something serious.

👁️ Understanding Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration affects the macula — the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision needed for reading, driving, and recognizing faces. While peripheral vision remains intact, advanced macular degeneration can be life-altering.

There are two forms of the disease:

🔸 Dry Macular Degeneration (most common – ~90% of cases)

Develops gradually and usually causes milder vision loss. It occurs as drusen (yellow deposits) build up under the macula, thinning and drying the retinal cells over time.

🔸 Wet Macular Degeneration (less common but more serious)

Abnormal blood vessels grow beneath the retina and leak blood or fluid, causing rapid and permanent damage to the cells that detect light. Most severe vision loss cases come from this form.

Who Is at Risk?

Age over 60 is the biggest factor, but risk increases with:
• Family history
• Smoking
• High blood pressure
• Obesity
• High-fat or high-cholesterol diet

If you’re noticing changes in your central vision — or are at higher risk — early evaluation is key.

For expert diagnosis and treatment, schedule a visit with Board-Certified Ophthalmologist Dr. Eric Shnayder.

👁️ What Are Eye Floaters?
Do you sometimes see tiny specks, strands, or cobweb-like shapes drifting across your vision? These are floaters—small clumps of gel or cells inside the vitreous (the clear gel that fills your eye). What you’re actually seeing are the shadows they cast on your retina.

✨ You may be more likely to develop floaters if you:
— Are nearsighted
— Have had cataract surgery
— Have experienced inflammation inside the eye

Most floaters are harmless—but a sudden increase, especially if paired with flashes of light, can signal a more serious problem and should be checked promptly.

The only reliable way to diagnose glaucoma is through a comprehensive eye exam — a simple pressure check is not enough.

During a full glaucoma evaluation, Dr. Eric Shnayder will:
• Measure your eye pressure
• Examine your eye’s drainage angle
• Check your optic nerve for signs of damage
• Test your peripheral (side) vision
• Capture imaging or computer measurements of your optic nerve
• Measure corneal thickness

Early detection is essential.

You can have diabetic retinopathy without knowing it — early stages often cause no symptoms at all. As it progresses, you may begin to notice:

• More floaters
• Blurry or fluctuating vision
• Dark or blank spots in your field of view
• Poor night vision
• Colors appearing faded or washed out
• Vision loss

These symptoms typically affect both eyes, and early detection is critical.

👁️ Ophthalmologist vs. Optometrist: What’s the Difference?

While both provide eye care, their training and capabilities are very different.

Ophthalmologists are medical doctors (MDs) specializing in eye and vision health. They complete medical school, residency, and advanced clinical training. They can diagnose and treat complex eye diseases, perform surgery, and provide full-spectrum eye care.

Optometrists hold a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree but are not medical doctors. They focus on routine eye exams, prescribing glasses and contact lenses, and managing certain basic eye conditions. Their clinical training is more limited.

Bottom line: Ophthalmologists handle everything from routine care to serious diseases and surgical procedures. Optometrists primarily manage vision correction and general eye health.

💻👀 Is Your Screen Time Hurting Your Eyes?
Staring at computers, tablets, and phones for hours can lead to Digital Eye Strain—causing blurred vision, headaches, dryness, or eye discomfort.
Common symptoms include:
🔹 Tired, achy eyes
🔹 Blurred or double vision
🔹 Dryness, stinging, or tearing
👨‍⚕️ The good news: digital eye strain doesn’t cause permanent damage—but it can impact your comfort and productivity. Simple changes, like taking screen breaks, blinking more often, and using proper eyewear, can make a big difference.
For ongoing discomfort, see Board-Certified Ophthalmologist Dr. Eric Shnayder for expert diagnosis and treatment options.
