Kinston Community Health Center (KCHC) is proud to announce Teresa Sugg as its 2026 Employee of the Year.

A native of Greene County and a graduate of North Lenoir High School, Sugg joined KCHC in 2013. She initially worked in Telemedicine Care and later that year transitioned into the role of Certified Medical Assistant. In 2018, she was promoted to Lead Certified Medical Assistant.

Sugg was formally recognized at the 2025 KCHC Staff Christmas Party on December 19. While she was visibly surprised by the announcement, her coworkers were not. She was nominated by supervisors and peers across departments for her dependability, positive attitude, and willingness to go above and beyond for patients and staff alike.

Colleagues described Sugg as loyal, hardworking, and consistently willing to help wherever neededโ€”often bridging gaps between clinical staff, the front desk, patient access, and the call center. Nominations highlighted her professionalism, problem-solving skills, and ability to maintain a positive attitude.

Sugg says her passion for healthcare began at the age of 12 following the passing of her grandfather. โ€œI love helping people,โ€ she said. โ€œI just donโ€™t know what else to do.โ€ She credits her coworkers, supervisors, and KCHC leadership for the support that has allowed her to grow in her career.

โ€œOne of the things that makes me feel most appreciated is coming back from PTO and hearing people say, โ€˜We missed you,โ€™โ€ Sugg shared. โ€œThat lets me know I have a place here.โ€

Suzanne Freeman, CEO of KCHC, praised the selection, stating, โ€œWe have many great people at KCHC, and Teresa is among the very best. This recognition is truly well deserved, and I couldnโ€™t be more excited for her.โ€

Sugg currently resides in Kinston with her fiancรฉ and their four children.

Known for her humility, she does not seek recognition, making the honor especially meaningful as KCHC celebrates her throughout 2026.

Our Story

Kinston Community Health Center, Inc. began as a vision by a group of concerned citizens of Lenoir County in May 1993, spearheaded by Revered Melvin Tate of St. Augustus A.M.E. Zion Church. For a couple of years, this group worked diligently to research all available resources and then to work as a Board of Directors to apply for the Federal HRSA 330 grant funds available to open a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). Lenoir Memorial Hospital graciously financially supported the development and implementation of the Kinston Community Health Center. In July/August of 1995 the first five staff members were hired. The health center saw its first patient on opening day in 1995. By October 1995, KCHC began Phase 1 renovations on the permanent site in downtown Kinston. Soon afterwards, KCHC moved to 324 N. Queen Street and more employees were added to the staff. Our patient population continued to grow.

In February 1998, a small one-room dental clinic with two operatories opened to provide the much needed dental care for the underserved individuals in the community. A local dentist, Dr. Junius Rose, provided a great deal of support during the planning and renovation phase of the small clinic. In June 2000, KCHC completed yet another phase of previously planned renovations and built a new full-size dental clinic featuring eight operatories, a lab, and a panorex to further develop what was once a bleak area in downtown Kinston. Dr. Rose continues to volunteer one full day per week, and he serves as a member of the Board of Directors.

An unoccupied second floor of the building was renovated to house the administration and finance departments. A few changes were made to the medical clinic to enhance the patient flow and create more space for clinical employees. From June 2000 to present, the Center continues to be a vital primary care provider in downtown Kinston.
