We are so lucky to have Bob on our team! Celebrating 16 Years of Compassion: Robert “Bob” Harris
For the past 16 years, Robert “Bob” Harris has been a steady, compassionate presence at Grissom Funeral Home—supporting families during some of life’s most difficult moments and quietly making a difference every day.
Bob’s journey with Grissom began through service. While helping at a local veterans club, another Grissom Funeral Home employee recognized his character and encouraged him to apply. That recommendation led to an introduction with the manager at the time—and the start of a career that has grown steadily over the years.
“I started out picking up death certificates and answering phones on the weekends,” Bob shared. From there, he began assisting with services, moved into driving loved ones in the coach, and eventually supported families across multiple Funeral Home locations. Each role added experience, perspective, and a deeper connection to the work.
When asked what has kept him at Grissom for all these years, Bob’s answer was simple: the people.
“The attitudes of the employees and the families are really nice. It always felt peaceful, and I got along with everyone,” he said. Coming from a background in law enforcement, Bob found funeral service to be a calmer, more centered environment—one rooted in care, compassion, and presence.
Over the years, Bob has seen the profession evolve. Like many in funeral service, he’s witnessed a significant shift toward cremation and fewer traditional burials. But while practices may change, the heart of the work remains the same.
For Bob, the most meaningful moments come from knowing he’s helped families navigate loss with compassion.
“Seeing the satisfaction of knowing you contributed—helping a family through their loss—reminds you why this work matters,” he explained. “There’s no right or wrong. Our job is simply to help, to calm, and to be there.”
What many people may not realize about funeral service is the emotional weight it carries. “You feel every family’s sorrow—every single one,” Bob shared. “You have to learn how to separate emotionally so you can continue to help without letting it overtake you.”
When asked to describe the culture at Grissom Funeral Home, Bob’s response was brief but powerful: peaceful and kind.
To anyone considering a career in funeral service, his advice is honest and heartfelt: “You have to have a lot of compassion, and you have to understand why you’re here.”
Looking back on his 16 years, Bob is most proud of his longevity and the knowledge he brings to the table—experience that allows him to better serve families and support his team.
And ultimately, it’s the people that keep him coming back.
“Being around the wonderful people I’ve had the chance to work with makes all the difference. This work isn’t for everyone—but the people here truly care.”
We are deeply grateful for Robert “Bob” Harris and the compassion, experience, and dedication he brings to Grissom Funeral Home. Thank you, Bob, for 16 years of service to our families and our community. 🤍
