T-minus 5 days until Halloween! Please consider that, just as all trick or treaters look differently on the outside, they feel differently on the inside as they navigate the excitement, social norms, and unexpected moments of trick or treating.

Hi all! I think a lot of you are familiar with me, but with some new followers I thought I would re-introduce myself. I’m Amanda and I’m a pediatric speech language pathologist in the Outer Banks. I’ve been a therapist for almost 14 years and have worked in a variety of settings, with a large portion of my career in the schools. I especially love treating speech sound disorders and working with children using AAC devices. When I’m not working I enjoy reading, running, the beach, and spending time with my family. I have two children, ages 3 and 6, and they are two of my biggest reasons for starting a private practice.

Do you have a child with speech or language difficulties? Or an educator or fellow SLP? I’d love to connect with you!

(Pictured here is my family on our recent snow tubing trip in the mountains 🥰)

We tend to use the word “articulation” when referring to speech sound delays and disorders, but articulation is actually just one piece of it. Other types include phonological delays and disorders, motor planning disorders (childhood apraxia of speech), and dysarthria. And sometimes children have more than one kind!

So you have a child who is struggling to produce correct sounds or is unintelligible- where do you start? How do you know which type of speech sound disorder they might have?

Start with a thorough evaluation! Having the information to rule in or rule out the different types of speech disorders means you can identify the best treatment approach for that child, and that’s really important to maximize progress and success.

Happy Friday! ☺️
