Yesterday, I wore this shirt to the gym and felt uncomfortable about it.

East TN is a very “red” area and if you know me, I am definitely “blue”. A lot of my clients process the loneliness and fear of standing out and being even slightly vocal about their beliefs in this area.

BUT at the end of class one woman said “I like your shirt.” I said “thanks” with my head down and walked away. Then walked back with my head up to say “I felt weird wearing it here, because I assume most peoples political views in this particular space are very different than mine.” She replied “well, I like it.” We both nodded and smiled as another woman said “me too.”

I told that story a client who reminded me just how important it is to be visible, because it matters. She also thanked me.

Therapy is political. Social work is all about advocating and creating systems of change for those that need it the most.

I didn’t expect to have so many emotions wearing a t shirt, because I wear stuff like this often. Now imagine, being a person of color, or an immigrant in this area.

Yall change happens in small moments over time.

Tonight, we had a celebratory dinner for Tina as she is leaving Cove Mountain and starting her own practice. Tina has been a valued friend and colleague in our little CMC community since 2023. We will miss her dearly but wish her all the best! ❤️

Research shows the relationship between you and your therapist matters more than any technique they use.

If you don’t feel safe, seen, or respected in that room, the work has nowhere to land.

You are allowed to ask questions before you commit. You are allowed to leave if something feels off. Trust is the whole foundation.

The right therapist will not make you feel judged or dismissed. You deserve someone who actually gets you.
