If you’ve used a tanning bed at any point in time, you’re at higher risk of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. Research has shown that indoor tanners are 74 percent more likely to develop melanoma than those who have never tanned indoors, and that just one session in a tanning bed could increase your risk by 20 percent. But a new study from Northwestern Medicine and the University of California, San Francisco confirms that the cancer risk from tanning beds is even worse than we thought: tripling (so a 200% increase) your risk of melanoma. And it gets worse. As one dermatologist told us, the key takeaway from this new research is that “tanning beds biologically shift your cells toward cancer.”.
