GLP-1s show promise for treating alcohol and substance use disorders
Healio (https://mailview.bulletinhealthcare.com/mailview.aspx?m=2025102901ama&r=4278252-c11d&l=005-a2c&t=c) (10/28, Monostra) reports experts wrote in a study that “GLP-1s hold promise as a potential treatment for alcohol and substance use disorders.” The researchers “discussed how GLP-1s are tied to several changes in the central nervous system and suggested the activation of GLP-1 receptors could reduce ‘drug-seeking and consummatory behaviors.’” They wrote “that some studies have found certain forms of obesity have phenotype characteristics that resemble addiction. Additionally, some therapies used to treat alcohol or substance use disorders, such as naltrexone and topiramate, are also used for obesity.” They called for “more research, including more studies to assess the mechanisms of GLP-1s as they relate to substance use disorders and more randomized controlled trials to evaluate efficacy and safety.” The study (https://mailview.bulletinhealthcare.com/mailview.aspx?m=2025102901ama&r=4278252-c11d&l=006-9e4&t=c) was published in the Journal of the Endocrine Society.

Short bursts of purposeful activity may be the best way to get in the habit of exercising, research suggests
NBC News (10/7, Sullivan) reports that research suggests “short bursts of purposeful activity –– such as walking around the block or lifting small weights –– may be the best way to get in the habit of exercising.” Investigators “found that in adults younger than 65, these small acts of physical activity significantly improved cardiorespiratory fitness.” Meanwhile, “for older adults –– those 65 and older –– exercise snacks significantly improved muscular endurance.” Individuals “were also extremely likely to adhere to these small bouts of exercise –– about 91% of adults and 83% of older adults routinely engaged in them.” The findings were published in BMJ Sports Medicine.
