Extreme Cold January 26-30, 2026 - Update 4
Extremely cold temperatures continue to impact the state. Actual temperatures will fall below 0 each morning through Sunday with wind chills dipping to -15 to -5 degrees. These are extremely dangerous to life-threatening values, as frostbite on exposed skin can occur in as little as 30 minutes. Prolonged exposure could lead to hypothermia.
Relief from the extreme cold arrives Sunday, but temperatures will not reach freezing again until Tuesday or Wednesday for the southern half of the state and potentially Friday north.
Heavy lake effect snow of 6-12 inches will impact Lake and Porter counties between 5PM today and 7PM Saturday. Outside of these counties, snowfall amounts quickly taper off.
Winds remain calm, limiting the blowing and drifting of snow. Ice jam development continues to be a concern statewide.
Potential impacts include:
โข Difficult travel in lake effect areas
โข Hypothermia/frostbite
โข Frozen pipes
โข High energy demand
โข Ice jams/flooding
