I usually identify as a wife, mom, sister, daughter, and gymnastics coach — but today, I want to identify as something else that has become a big part of my life.
I’m a 39-year-old mom of two who carries the BRCA1 gene. This year, that part of my story became very real. In February, I had a double mastectomy, and in June, I went through reconstructive surgery. Every day, I thank God for giving me the chance to get rid of cancer before cancer got rid of me.
It wasn’t an easy decision — it took me years to face the “what ifs” — but it was the right one. My journey with BRCA isn’t over, but I’m sharing this because for the last 10 years, I searched online hoping to find someone like me — someone I could relate to, someone who understood.
So today, I want to be that person for someone else — the one you can see, hear from, and know you’re not alone. 💗
