Sleep disturbances affect a large percentage of the population. When poor sleep starts to cause emotional/psychological health problems it could be important to seek help. Many times the sleep disturbances are associated with depression, anxiety, and other mental illness; it's important to have a professional assessment. It is also important to rule out any physiological conditions, a sleep study is always recommended. There are a number of sleep aids available and they have different mechanisms of action. Recently, a new type of sleep medication has become available for practitioners to prescribe; these new medications target Orexin, also known as hypocretin, which is a neuropeptide that regulates arousal, wakefulness, and appetite. Most sleep aids help induce sleep, but these new medications help with staying asleep. When Orexin spikes it can cause that awakening in the middle of the night that causes the feeling of not being able to fall back asleep. These new sleep aids target Orexin and block it from acting on the brain to block that wakefulness feeling.
