Spider veins may look like a surface-only issue, but many cases are actually caused by underlying venous reflux (leaky valves in deeper veins).
• A duplex ultrasound shows whether a deeper “feeder” vein is sending pressure down to the surface.
• If that root problem isn’t treated, spider veins often come back, even after cosmetic injections.

Many people with vein problems—such as varicose veins or chronic venous insufficiency—have nighttime leg cramps and restless legs.

Nighttime Leg Cramps

Night cramps are sudden, tight muscle spasms that usually affect the calf or foot. They often happen when you’re lying down or first falling asleep.

Why they happen with vein problems

When the veins in the legs aren’t working well, blood can pool in the lower legs, causing pressure and irritation in the muscles. By nighttime, after a full day of standing or sitting, this pressure is at its worst, making cramps more likely.

What the cramps feel like
• A sharp or squeezing pain in the calf or thigh
• The muscle becomes hard or tight
• The cramp can last from a few seconds to several minutes
• Your leg may feel sore afterward

Restless Legs

Many people with vein issues experience symptoms similar to Restless Legs Syndrome, even if they don’t have the neurologic condition.

What “restless legs” feel like

You may notice:
• A strong urge to move your legs
• Tingling, crawling, or “electric” feelings
• Discomfort that makes it hard to relax
• Symptoms that get worse in the evening or when lying down
• Relief when you move, stretch, or walk
evaluation is with ultrasound of the leg veins, called a Venus insufficiency study
Share this with someone who has night cramps or RLS and may not know why.
