You’ll also read about:
- A golfer with a recent vision injury who was treated by the ophthalmology team at Scripps to get back to the sport he loves.

Lung cancer often doesn’t cause symptoms until it’s in a late stage. A low-dose CT scan can detect it early when it’s most treatable and help prevent advanced disease. If you’re 50 or older and currently smoke or quit within the past 15 years, ask your doctor about lung cancer screening. Early detection saves lives. Learn more here:

Food poisoning affects millions of people each year but is often preventable. Holiday dishes, especially popular Thanksgiving foods, require careful handling to keep everyone healthy.

“Simple steps like washing your hands and cooking food thoroughly can go a long way in preventing food poisoning. The symptoms — like nausea, stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhea — can be miserable and in some cases, the illness can become serious or even life-threatening.” says Tina Tran, MD, an internal medicine physician at Scripps Coastal Medical Center San Marcos.

Shots, vaccines and immunizations are often used interchangeably, but each has a different meaning. A shot is the method of delivery, a vaccine is the substance that helps your body recognize a virus or bacteria and immunization is the protection that results. “For many people, neck pain starts with something simple, like poor posture or an uncomfortable night’s sleep,” says Ali Bagheri, MD, spine surgeon at Scripps Clinic Torrey Pines.
