Healthy Charles County Health tips, safe group walking opportunities, and announcements for free classes and services

The Partnerships for a Healthier Charles County (PHCC) serves as Charles County's Local Health Improvement Coalition. The MISSION of the Partnerships for a Healthier Charles County is to serve as a community health network and forum for collaboration to identify and address the health needs of our community. The VISION of the Partnerships for a Healthier County is to improve the health and quality of life for all Charles County citizens with the goal of increasing life expectancy across all racial and ethnic groups. Executive leadership of the PHCC is shared by the heads of four local entities: the Charles County Department of Health, the Charles County Public Schools, the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center and the College of Southern Maryland.

Wow!!!! Walk Charles County just had a record number of participants as part of the First Day Hike with the support of Charles County Parks & Recreation!!!

The cold New Year’s Day did not deter 92 participants from coming out and either walking around Wheatley Lake in part (about a mile) or its entirety 2.23 miles!!

Everyone was enthusiastic and enjoyed themselves at the gem that is Gilbert Run. A lot of comments such as ‘this is such a great way to start the year.’ to ‘I just did that!’

Most participants were first-timers to a Walk Charles County event.

🌿 FIRST DAY HIKE — JANUARY 1, 2026 🌿

Start the New Year moving, breathing, and connecting outdoors!

Join Walk Charles County, with the support of Charles County Parks & Recreation for a refreshing First Day Hike at the gem that is Gilbert Run Park.

📍 Location
Gilbert Run Park

🕚 Time
• 11:00 AM — Arrival
• 11:30 AM — Walk begins

🚗 Parking & Meet-Up
We will park at the Brookeside Pavilion parking lot, where there is ample parking and restrooms available.
👉 Walk Charles County will be set up at the Brookeside Pavilion, so look for us there!

🥾 The Walk
We’ll enjoy the beautiful nature trail that loops around Wheatley Lake, approximately 2.5 miles long — a peaceful, scenic way to welcome the New Year.

💲 Cost - FREE
No fee required this time of year — just show up and walk!

✨ Start the year with fresh air, gentle movement, and community. Bring a friend, dress for the weather, and come enjoy the simple pleasure of being outside.
