Saturday’s Foraging Walk yielded a lot of new discoveries in the Fall season, including this cattail stand down a steep bank. Usually, I only pull for the shoots, leaving the root in water, but this one got replanted. All for the sake of demo, I wouldn’t harvest here as I don’t know the source well enough, and cattails are a bio-remediating plant, absorbing pollination and impurities, thus improving water and soil quality! Why cattails?
🐈‍⬛The shoots are reminiscent of hearts of palm, and very nutritious!
🐈‍⬛The immature flower head can be steamed or simmered- reminiscent of corn, full of nutrients.
🐈‍⬛The pollen can be collected and added to baked goods, oatmeal, etc., and yes, very nutritious!
Golden rules of foraging: seek permission, know your source, and identify positively! Also, respect the plant itself- forage only in abundant stands, harvest only the part needed- or in my case, at least replant if you goof!

A few recaps of A Day of Wellness at Ravens Crest on September 27th! We started the day with a foraging walk on the beautiful grounds, followed by a kitchen demo, and a wild foods lunch. Part two was "A Deep Dive into Essential Oils," which we enjoyed on the porch overlooking the Potomac.
This beautiful facility is available for workshops, retreats, and even overnight stays, all of which supports the preservation of this 170-acre working farm.
