‘I WANT YOU TO BE HAPPY’ DAY - Tuesday, March 3
“Happiness is the highest form of health” - the Dalai Lama
If you are happy and you know it … you may live longer! A new study published in the Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences found that optimistic, happy people had a longer life span, with a greater chance of living beyond age 85. Years of research prove that having a happy, positive on life in general leads to a reduced risk of stroke, heart attack and cancer. Much of this data is based on the ‘Optimism-Pessimism Scale’ which examines both the positive and negative explanations that people give for events in their life. Researchers believe that one component of optimism in accomplishing “exceptional longevity” is genetic, in addition to our learning and our environment. However, we can all learn ways to be more optimistic and happier overall!
Today is National “I Want You To Be Happy” Day, and here are a few ideas to make both you and those you encounter today happier:
- As soon as you are awake, make your first thoughts happy ones
- Make someone smile by giving a smile, flower, gift or compliment
- Run an errand for a neighbor or friend
- Volunteer where your happy self is most needed
- Remind your family how much you love them and how happy they make you feel
- Leave a happy note for your partner or someone special in an unexpected place
- Draw a smiley face in the snow or sand for the next passers-by to enjoy
- See happiness from another’s perspective – everyone’s definition and experience of happiness is different
- Before you drift off to sleep, make your final thoughts happy ones!
