What are peptides? What are they used for? And are they safe?
Peptides are short chains of 2 to 50 amino acids held together by a peptide bond. Peptides are like “mini proteins” that binds to target receptors and act primarily as signaling molecules that deliver instructions to specific cells and tissues. These powerful molecules are administered commonly via subcutaneous injections for maximum absorption through the blood stream and to bypass breakdown in the digestive system, however there are some peptides formulated for oral use.
Despite the lack of clinical trials and long-term safety data, why are peptides in such demand? The bottom line is that peptides show clinical benefit, the mechanism of action of peptides are generally well known, and animal models show promise. There are many peptides being used for improved performance and recovery from sports injuries, longevity and mitochondrial repair, and for collagen boost for skin and hair loss.
