The first few years of Lakes Region Mental Health Center:

•1967: offices moved to the historic Masonic Temple Building on Main Street in Laconia, and LRMHC welcomed a second staff member!

• 1968: the first fund drive was held in May, "Mental Health Month" raising $2,691. The Plymouth branch office opened one day a week.

By 1969, LRMHC had a 40% increase in clients from the prior year. Pictured is a photo of the Board of Directors from that year's Annual Meeting. From left, seated: Dr. Spencer Brody, Mrs. Peter Millham, Secretary of the Board of Directors, Atty. Rodney Dyer. Standing: Mr. Ben Walters, Dr. George S. Harris, Jr., chairman; and guest speaker Dr. David Meyerson, head of the Department of Drug Addiction at Boston State Hospital.

Please join us on October 28, 2025, as we celebrate 6 decades of positive impact in our community at our Annual Meeting. All are welcome.

This Sunday, LRMHC participated in the 9th Annual International Overdose Awareness Vigil at Rotary Park. We came together to honor those we have lost to substance use and to listen to powerful stories from individuals on their recovery journey. Thank you, Navigating Recovery of the Lakes Region and International Overdose Awareness Day, for hosting this event.

September is National Su***de Prevention Month. Su***de is a major public health concern and a leading cause of death in the U.S.

At Lakes Region Mental Health Center we will be sharing resources, stats and tips throughout the month to raise awareness. By sharing resources with you and then you sharing them with your community we want more people to recognize the warning signs of su***de and learn how to get help.

If you, or someone you know, is experiencing a mental health crisis locally, the LRMHC Mobile Crisis Response Team is available to help, 24/7. Call 1-833-710-6477 for confidential, mental health or substance use support.

Our Story

Lakes Region Mental Health Center (LRMHC) formerly known as Genesis Behavioral Health (GBH) is a private, non-profit organization designated by the State of New Hampshire as the community mental health center serving Belknap and southern Grafton Counties. Founded in 1966, LRMHC provides comprehensive, integrated mental health treatment for people living with - and recovering from - mental illness and/or emotional distress. In Fiscal Year 2019, LRMHC’s 195 employees served 4,081 children, adults and families and provided over $1.2 million dollars of charity care.

LRMHC provides 24/7 Emergency Services; individual, group and family therapy; mobile crisis teams in the event a tragic event occurs that impacts a community at large, psychiatry; nursing; community support programs for people with severe and persistent mental illness; care management; community-based supports; wellness programs, housing; supported employment; substance use disorder treatment; and specialty services and evidence-based practices for children and their families, including trauma-focused therapy, art therapy and play therapy. Child Impact seminars are offered at both campuses in Laconia and Plymouth for divorcing families.

LRMHC collaborates with many other organizations in the region to improve access to care and meet the mental health needs of the community. Clinicians are on-site at several primary care offices, area school districts, nursing homes, Plymouth State University, and Lakes Region Community College. LRMHC works closely with the judicial system to provide treatment and support for those at risk of incarceration due to their illness. LRMHC is a key partner in the Laconia School District’s “Safe Schools” grant. The agency works closely with LRGHealthcare and Speare Memorial Hospital to provide medical staff, training, and support for programs such as the provision of Emergency Services at three hospitals, the Designated Receiving Facility in Franklin, the Senior Psychiatric Unit in Laconia, and telehealth to rural areas. LRMHC was one of only sixty recipients nationwide to receive a $1.6 million four-year Primary and Behavioral Health Care Integration Grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration in 2015. Patients at LRMHC now have integrated mental and physical health care available at the community mental health center, provided through partnerships with the two area Federally Qualified Health Centers (HealthFirst Family Care Center and Mid-State Health Center).
