I found myself at the doors of Treehouse Recovery in California. This time, it felt different. I was there for over six months, living afterward in a recovery home surrounded by people who were fighting just as hard as I was to get better.

Stress has been demonized throughout our culture, which has reinforced the idea for many people that “stress is bad”. This, of course, leads to people doing everything in their power to avoid stress despite the fact that it’s an inevitable factor of life.

"Lembke puts it plainly in Dopamine Nation: the relentless pursuit of pleasure leads to pain. Not as a moral consequence, not as punishment, but as a neurobiological reality. The brain is a balancing machine. Push it hard enough in one direction, and it will push back harder in the other. This is why the person in active addiction isn't chasing a high anymore. They're running from the pain that their own brain is generating in response to years of overstimulation. The drug stopped being about pleasure a long time ago. Now it's the only thing standing between them and a baseline that sits squarely in suffering."

Dopamine plays a complex role during periods of intense emotional distress, such as grief or trauma. Dopamine levels surge to drive the individual towards seeking something urgently, whether it’s emotional closure or a return to psychological stability.

A fighter, a warrior, and always a friend of Into Action. His story is not a straight line from our door to where he is today, and sometimes that is part of the story, but what's important for us - is that we stay supportive of each other. We are grateful for our many Alumni.

Please come and join us for pizza and speakers, including Corey.
