Salads for dinner with added protein are great choices for summer. đ
On Sunday morning, before the days of intense heat started, I harvested all our heat sensitive crops, including baskets full of lettuce.
Stay safe, everyone!!!

How do you know if food is a really good choice?
The secret is knowing and understanding how to look at the nutrition facts and ingredients list. đBut it goes beyond that.
It's also about knowing what to ignore on food packages and labels.
It's also developing the skills to avoid being fooled by some common tricks marketers use on food packages and social media.
Food packages can trick you if youâre not careful. Here's how not to get fooled by food marketers when you grocery shop
03/16/2025
When you're in a grocery store or shopping online, it can be so difficult to decide what are good choices for you to eat. The front of every package, or the description if you shop online, is designed to get you to do three things:
⢠Notice the item
⢠Think that it is the right food for you
⢠Buy the item
That last point is especially important!
Now, the company that's producing the product and the marketing team they've hired to design the package and promote it online and on social media really do not care if the product is good for you or not. They are only interested in getting you to buy it.
That may sound harsh, but it's true.

Evening snacking is a challenge for many people, including me!
Keeping your hands busy can help reduce snacking.
At this time of year, I frequently knit socks. This weekend, I finished these simple ones for my husband.
What do you do to limit snacking?

Many people are uncertain if they should be eating starchy vegetables or not.
One of the most common pieces of advice about "healthy eating" is that starchy vegetables are bad for you. But is this nutrition fact or nutrition fiction? Or is it somewhere in between?
Like so many things in life, there are nuances to answering this question. Contrary to popular belief in the keto diet world, eating starchy vegetables is not bad for you.
But there are three things you want to think about when eating them.
Thereâs been a lot written and spoken about building and keeping healthy eating habits. After years of helping people change how they eat, however, Iâve found that a simple but powerful piece of information is often omitted from all of that advice.
Healthy eating habits are habits!
I know that seems obvious, but the simple fact is that most diet plans, weight loss programs, and âquick start plansâ forget this. Many of them have people changing how, what and when they eat overnight.
It takes time and practice to build the skills and set new eating habits. Sometimes, your brain or your metabolism works against you.
As you progress in your journey of adopting healthier eating habits, don't expect that you're going to eat "perfectly according to plan" 100% of the time.
What's the other secret?

To boost your chances of success in changing how you eat, it is critically important that you shift the focus of your goal. Instead of focusing on your ultimate goal, focus on how you are going to achieve that goal. I teach this "shift focus" technique to people who see me for nutrition counseling.
Itâs easiest to explain this with the analogy: Imagine you are trying to explain to someone how to get from city A to city B without using a travel app or GPS device. You arenât going to spend the majority of your time telling them how wonderful city B is.
Instead, youâre going to focus on how they will get there.đ

This is a simple concept but an important one. When you are building healthier eating habits, you are on a journey to go from how you eat now to how you want to eat in the future. Like any journey, unless youâve got a magic transporter, you donât get from one place to another instantly.

Hereâs another reason why âProgress, not perfectionâ works!
Diet plans that have you make multiple changes at the same time can also lead you down the insidious path of negative self-talk, self-doubt, and loss of self-confidence. Thatâs the voice in your head that whispers or screams, "You blew that one!" or similar phrases. Hearing that often leads us to abandon our efforts to change.
âProgress, not perfectionâ succeeds because it recognizes it takes time and practice to develop new skills and habits that support healthy eating habits.
It encourages you to build on incremental changes instead of berating yourself when your brain reverts to old habits.

When weight and gut issues become a part of our life not only are we faced with the challenge of restoring health and balance, but we can also be robbed of energy, body confidence, and simply enjoying our life to the fullest. What we find is that food becomes a daily struggle â fighting with cravings, confusion from nutrition misinformation and even feeling like food is our enemy.
Food is central to health and wellness and plays a big part in our enjoyment of life â find your food joy again with an approach that can make all the difference in how you feel. Before becoming a registered dietitian nutritionist, I had another career and struggled with poor eating habits, managed stress by eating, and battled belly fat and weight gain.
Iâve also struggled with gut health issues and felt like my body had turned against me. Food went from being pleasurable to something causing pain, worry and very disrupting reactions in my body.
Fortunately, I was able to resolve my issues. How? By applying what I learned through thousands of hours of advanced studies in nutrition and body science and by staying current with emerging research.
I am so thankful for how my life has improved and that I can help countless others address their health and weight concerns and realize they can feel great and still enjoy food.
The key thing that may be missing in your health and eating journey...
To make the changes you want, itâs important to have someone who works one on one with you to help you on your eating journey. A person who understands the science of how your body and food interacts and takes the time to understand your preferences, lifestyle, medical history, schedule, and challenges. Someone who encourages you and helps you identify and adopt changes, habits, and routines that can take you from where are to where you want to be. This is precisely what I do with people like you!
