After arriving at Roper Hospital by ambulance in January 2024 with Guillain-Barré Syndrome, one patient credits nurse Jessica with changing the course of his recovery.

"I came closer to death than I ever wanted, but she made sure that wasn't the end of my story."

Through the Roper St. Francis Foundation's Honor Your Caregiver program, he returned to recognize Jessica and teammates across the SICU, rehab and therapy services with certificates and "Honored Caregiver" lapel pins.

He also brought gumbo, because some gratitude calls for more than words.

That's thanks to Jose Saravia, a patient care technician who had a simple but powerful idea: bring nature to patients who need it most. His caring spirit led to the creation of a horticulture therapy program that uses plants and gardening to help patients feel better in both body and mind.
