Today our focus is on Mitral Regurgitation
Mitral regurgitation happens when the mitral valve doesn’t close properly, causing blood to leak backward from the left ventricle into the left atrium instead of moving forward to the body.
According to the American College of Cardiology, mitral regurgitation affects over 4 million Americans and is the most common valvular heart disease in the U.S.
Symptoms may include:
• Shortness of breath (especially with activity or lying down)
• Fatigue or reduced energy
• Heart palpitations or irregular heartbeat
• Swelling in the legs or feet
• Rapid or pounding heartbeat
Many people have no symptoms early on—making early detection key.
