Today our focus is on Mitral Regurgitation

Mitral regurgitation happens when the mitral valve doesn’t close properly, causing blood to leak backward from the left ventricle into the left atrium instead of moving forward to the body.

According to the American College of Cardiology, mitral regurgitation affects over 4 million Americans and is the most common valvular heart disease in the U.S.

Symptoms may include:
• Shortness of breath (especially with activity or lying down)
• Fatigue or reduced energy
• Heart palpitations or irregular heartbeat
• Swelling in the legs or feet
• Rapid or pounding heartbeat

Many people have no symptoms early on—making early detection key.

Stay tuned to learn about treatment options and when to seek care.

Today we celebrate the strength, leadership, and impact of women everywhere.

At HeartSense, we are especially grateful for the women who serve as community health advocates, students, clinicians, and leaders working to advance heart health in underserved communities. Their dedication is helping bring education, early detection, and life-saving screenings to those who might otherwise go without care.

Heart disease remains a leading cause of death for women, yet too many cases go undiagnosed until it’s too late. Through community-based outreach and innovative screening programs, HeartSense is working to change that—one screening, one conversation, and one life at a time.

Aortic stenosis is treatable.

Now that we’ve explained what aortic stenosis is, let’s look at the treatment options.
When the aortic valve becomes severely narrowed, there are two primary treatment approaches:

• TAVR — a minimally invasive procedure where a new valve is placed inside the existing valve.

• SAVR — open-heart surgery where the diseased valve is removed and replaced.

Both procedures are designed to restore blood flow from the heart.

Valvular heart disease occurs when one or more of the heart’s valves do not open or close properly, disrupting normal blood flow.

Today, we’re focusing on Aortic Stenosis — one of the most common forms of valve disease. Aortic stenosis is the narrowing of the aortic valve, which restricts blood flow from the heart to the body.

Approximately 1.6 million U.S. adults aged 60 and older are affected. Yet symptoms often emerge slowly, making them easy to dismiss as normal aging.

Common symptoms may include:
• Chest pain
• Shortness of breath
• Difficulty walking short distances
• Heart palpitations (rapid or irregular heartbeat)
• Dizziness or light-headedness
• Swollen ankles or feet

Heart Valve Disease Awareness Day may have been yesterday — but the conversation cannot end there.

Nearly 7 million Americans are living with heart valve disease.¹
The prevalence increases significantly with age:
• Approximately 2% of adults age 65 and older
• More than 10% of adults age 75 and older

Many individuals may not experience symptoms until the disease has progressed.
Over the coming weeks, we’ll continue to explore the types, symptoms, and treatment options for valvular heart disease — and why early detection matters.

Awareness is important.
Understanding risk — and expanding access — changes outcomes.

February is Heart Month — and awareness is only the starting point.

While national mortality statistics are well known, the burden of undiagnosed structural heart disease in community settings is often underestimated — particularly in populations disconnected from routine specialty care.

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for 1 in every 5 deaths.¹ But what those numbers don’t show is how many individuals are living with heart conditions that have never been identified.

In our community screening initiatives, we have found that more than 50% of individuals identified with a structural heart condition were not engaged with the healthcare system.

Early detection changes outcomes.
Access changes trajectories.

☕🍫 Did you know?
According to the American Heart Association, dark cocoa contains natural flavanols that have been associated with heart-healthy markers like blood vessel function and blood pressure when enjoyed in moderation.

On National Hot Chocolate Day, it’s a reminder that small, everyday moments — even enjoying something warm — can play a role in overall well-being.

Stay cozy. Stay balanced. Take care of your heart.
