Have hip, thigh or knee pain? It could be coming from the back. Here’s a guide:

Likely from the low back if:
-pain is in buttock region or thigh (even if no low back pain)
-Bending forward/backward or leaning side to side in standing increases your pain
-Bending forward/lifting, or sitting or standing/walking long distances increases pain
-May have numbness, tingling, or weakness in leg, foot, or toes
-lying on back and moving hip up/down rotation does not increase your pain

Likely from the hip if:
-pain is in groin or occasionally outside part of hip around hip bone
-no low back pain along with the hip pain
-lying on back with back straight and moving only the hip around brings on your pain
-standing or jumping on leg increases pain or squatting gives pain in front of hip or twisting hip like putting on a sock in figure 4 position

-shoulder pain increases or neck feels stiff when turning head to look over left or right shoulder
-pain is in back of shoulder (shoulder blade)
-moving your arm overhead does not increase pain
-you have numbness or tingling or pain shooting down arm toward hand

It is shoulder pain if:
-moving arm overhead or bringing hand behind back increases pain
-pain is on side of outside shoulder (over deltoid)
-looking over shoulder by turning neck does not feel stiff or increase shoulder pain

-aching pain versus burning pain
