Performing regular self-breast exams is one of the simplest and most powerful ways to stay proactive about your health. By knowing your body and noticing any changes early, you increase your chances of detecting potential issues when they’re most treatable. Early detection can save lives.
How to do a self-breast exam:
1️⃣ Visual Check in Front of a Mirror – Stand with shoulders straight and arms on your hips. Look for changes in size, shape, or symmetry, and check for dimpling, puckering, redness, or swelling. Raise your arms overhead and repeat.
2️⃣ Physical Check — Lying Down – Lie on your back with a pillow under your shoulder. Place your arm behind your head. Using the pads of your fingers, move in small circular motions to feel the entire breast and armpit area. Repeat on the other side.
3️⃣ Physical Check — Standing or in the Shower – Many find it easier to check while wet and slippery. Use circular motions to feel for lumps, thickening, or changes.
4️⃣ Know What’s Normal – Breasts naturally have lumps or nodules; what’s important is consistency. Any new, persistent, or unusual changes should be checked by your doctor promptly.
Encourage the women in your life — friends, sisters, mothers — to do the same. Awareness, education, and action are your best defenses. 💕
