Most people think picky eating is behavior…but for young kids, it’s usually sensory. Eating is incredibly complex for the body. Before age 2–3, feeding challenges are rarely about behavior; they are almost always sensory-based learning experiences. So when a child refuses food, gags, or avoids certain textures…it may not be defiance, it may be their body saying, “this feels like too much right now.”

🥣Feeding is more than just getting food in.

It’s about building the skills that make eating possible, like moving food in the mouth, managing textures, and developing chewing.

This article explains one simple but powerful tool we often use to support those early skills.

What are Hard Munchables? Hard Munchables are rod shaped food items that a child can hold independently and when inserted into the child’s mouth, it does not break apart and is long enough that a p…

What we see on the outside doesn’t always tell the full story. Sometimes avoidance is a child’s way of protecting themselves from something that feels overwhelming in their body. Occupational therapy helps us understand those underlying needs so we can support regulation, build safety, and create the conditions where learning and participation can grow.

Together Against Loneliness 💙💛

Today is World Down Syndrome Day, a day to celebrate individuals with Down syndrome and reflect on how we can build a more connected, inclusive world.

This year’s theme, “Together Against Loneliness,” is a powerful reminder that connection matters. Every person deserves to be valued and included—not just today, but every day.

At PTLC, we believe connection is the foundation of everything we do. Relationships come first. It’s through shared joy, play, and meaningful interactions that we help children grow AND feel like they truly belong.

Today, we’re honored to share a moment captured between Mrs. Shannon and her brother. Their smiles reflect something simple but powerful--a shared moment of connection.

Let’s continue to build bridges of connection and stand together against loneliness.

🤩Speech therapy rarely looks like flashcards or worksheets at our clinic. We play, act out books, and make up fun challenges. And sometimes we play chess.

During activities like this, we’re working on much more than the game itself. We’re supporting:

• Receptive language, such as understanding rules, directions, and strategy
• Expressive language, such as explaining moves, reasoning, and problem-solving out loud
• Cognition, such as planning ahead, flexible thinking, and decision-making

For all of our kiddos, including teens, therapy often focuses on real-life thinking and communication skills that carry over into school, conversations, and everyday situations.

It's play with a lot of purposeful learning happening in every move.

You don’t have to figure it out on your own.

Many parents come to us with questions like:
“Is this normal?”
“Should I be concerned?”
“Will they grow out of it?”

Our team helps you understand your child’s communication skills and how they fit into overall development.

Sometimes reassurance is all you need.
Sometimes support can make a big difference.

Either way, we’re here to help.

Parents are often the first to notice when something about communication just seems a little harder than it should be.

Sometimes speech and language challenges aren’t about how clearly a child talks, but about how easily they communicate their thoughts and understand others.

Many children who benefit from speech therapy are bright, social, and doing well in school. But parents may notice little signs like frustration when explaining ideas, difficulty following directions, or trouble telling stories about their day.

Communication is a skill that develops over time, and when children get the right support, they often gain confidence very quickly.

If you’ve noticed any of these signs, you’re not alone. Many families start asking questions around these same moments.

Have you ever wondered whether your child’s communication skills are where they should be?

Our speech therapists are always happy to talk with parents and help them decide whether an evaluation would be helpful.

🏃🤩Obstacle courses are a fan favorite at PTLC for our kiddos AND for both our speech/language pathologists and occupational therapists. There are endless opportunities to work on goals for communication, motor skills, idea development, handwriting, planning and sequencing, safety awareness, social skills....The list goes on and on.... Our job is to figure out how to work in the just-right challenge zone, while also fostering joy and making learning meaningful. We love watching our kiddos build skills while applying them in a meaningful way.
