Next Thursday, January 29th, communities across the country will take part in the annual Point-in-Time Count. This count helps us understand how many people are experiencing homelessness on one winter night (Wednesday, Jan. 28). For service providers like YWCA Greater Lafayette, the PIT Count helps guide programs, funding, and services.

Counting guests staying in the YWCA Greater Lafayette Domestic Violence Shelter is simple. The harder part is counting people who are unsheltered; those sleeping in cars, encampments, or other places not designed for people to live. Volunteers ask questions like, โ€œWhere did you sleep last night?โ€ to make sure everyone is seen and counted.

The PIT Count is about more than numbers. Itโ€™s about dignity, visibility, and caring for our neighbors.

We extend our sincere thanks to Boilers in Action for volunteering with us on MLK Day and for your partnership and support. Organizations and student groups like yours play a vital role in keeping our programs running and ensuring we can continue providing lifesaving services to our clients and the broader community.

Your willingness to give your time and energy in service reflects the values and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and aligns closely with our mission at YWCA Greater Lafayette to eliminate racism and empower women.

Thank you for showing up, serving with purpose, and helping make our community stronger.

YWCA Greater Lafayette recently joined community partners to stand firmly against the criminalization of homelessness. Our CEO, Lindsey Mickler, met with Wes Tillett (Lafayette Urban Ministry), Steven Flowers (Greater Lafayette Family Shelter), and Jennifer Layton (LTHC Homeless Services) to discuss coordinated strategies at both the state and local levels.

Together, we explored ways to strengthen partnerships across Greater Lafayette, bringing together government, business, nonprofit, faith, education, and community leaders to advance real solutions. We know that addressing homelessness requires both immediate responses and long-term investments in housing and supportive services, not punitive measures.

We urge our community to take action now by contacting state legislators to oppose the bills currently under consideration.

The principles of nonviolence and compassion championed by Dr. King remain essential in confronting todayโ€™s challenges. Recognizing his work reminds us that impactful change requires courage, persistence, and a commitment to justice that endures beyond a single day. At YWCA Greater Lafayette we are committed to keeping MLKโ€™s legacy alive as we continue our mission for justice, freedom and dignity for all.

On this day in 1920, the Indiana General Assembly ratified a constitutional amendment allowing women to vote. That victory didnโ€™t happen by accident. It happened because people organized, spoke up, and demanded change.

At YWCA Greater Lafayette, we honor that legacy by encouraging our community to show up and be heard. Voting is one of the most powerful tools we have to create a more just, equitable future for women, families, and our entire community.

Your voice matters. Your vote matters.
