The Family Recovery Solution: Addiction Navigation for Families

The Family Recovery Solution: Addiction Navigation for Families Addiction breeds isolation. Together let’s create new conditions. From the standpoint of professionals and families alike, we are that village. Together.

TFRS is a 3-phase program empowering families to: 1) Enable health within their body (physically, mentally, and spiritually), 2) Enable health within their relationships, and 3) Enable health within their family. The Family Recovery Solution (TFRS) believes that better outcomes are achieved when there are multiple resources accessible to change the tide of addiction - It takes a village. TFRS Deep Community is an online community that supports, complements, and integrates into all addiction treatment services. A flexible complement to all addiction treatment services. Together we provide support that none of us provide alone. Together we support the whole family engaging in change, recovery, transformation. TFRS is accessible to anyone with an internet connection, anyone who cares about recovery. Connecting likeminded people with one another, multiple resources, and expertise. The online community confronts stigma by providing anonymity to people signing up, giving them control and responsibility to how and when they chose to engage with others in the community. Multiple resources are available 24/7 for community members to engage in their own time. Expertise comes in the form of interviews with topic experts, and providing avenues for community members to engage in specific resources at their pace, when they are ready (expertise from TFRS as well as other addiction professionals). At the heart of the TFRS Deep Community (TFRS-DC) is TFRS 3 phase process. Families can opt into doing this 3 phase process together, or stay a community member. Community members will have a loved one at various levels of addiction or recovery. The cross-pollination aspect of this service delivery model provides unique opportunities for all community members to recognize their own unique contributions, practice resources that are most useful for them, and realize optimal healing, recovery, and discovery of next best steps for families as well as individuals.

Families with an addicted member are in the perfect position to create conditions inhospitable to active addiction, assuming we professionals don't continue to shame them, and we let them know specifically what they can do.

In the late 1930’s, Al-Anon was getting started.

Despite the myth that families need to wait until a loved one in addiction hits bottom, families have the power to change their end of communication patterns and family rules can become stronger than addiction's rules.

Because our society enables polarization, I accept that not everyone can rethink addiction. But, if you are open to recognizing it in yourself, slowing down, considering truth in multiple perspectives, only then can you make your best decision.

If you're looking for a truly new approach to multiple solutions for addiction in the family and are willing to rethink old patterns, check out this podcast, my website, my book, and my upcoming 6-week masterclass.

Every day, nearly 300 people die from overdose or addiction-related causes.

Families are on the front lines of this crisis, yet they’re often met with shame, blame, and punitive responses rather than understanding.

In my recent conversation with S. Jeff Jones of The Family Recovery Solution: Addiction Navigation for Families, we explore the complexity that often gets lost in addiction treatment conversations.

Genetics play a significant role in vulnerability to addiction, but so do learned relational and nervous-system patterns: people-pleasing, self-abandonment, and “loving strategies” that make sense in context but may unintentionally reinforce old dynamics.

Jeff introduces the idea of unproductive loving, a framework that helps clinicians move beyond black-and-white thinking and toward more nuanced, compassionate work with families affected by addiction.

We also unpack how terms like enabling have become oversimplified in recovery spaces, limiting curiosity and clinical flexibility.

This is an important conversation for therapists who work with substance use, families, and complex relational systems—and for anyone interested in more humane, effective approaches to recovery.

Every day, about 300 people die from an overdose or an addiction-related cause. For years, this statistic has not gone down significantly. Why is this acceptable?
