As the years go by, many of us find ourselves with more house than we truly need — and more upkeep than we want. Downsizing to a senior living community can be an incredible sense of relief.

Join their reality!

There is no reason to continuously "orientate" them to the current times. If your parent's recent memory is poor, but their memories from 50 years ago are vivid, join them! Ask them questions about people from that time, what they were interested in, what they were wearing, what things cost, etc.

Learn and celebrate your heritage!

People from the past are very much alive to them during these stages of the disease, so learn about your grandparents and family that are no longer living. If they tell you the same story over and over, appreciate it as if it is music.

This is not about "playing along to pacify them". This is an opportunity to communicate and treasure memories so real from another time.
