April is recognized as Alcohol Awareness Month, highlighting the importance of education and prevention efforts related to alcohol misuse. Research shows that individuals who begin drinking before age 15 are significantly more likely to develop alcohol use disorder and face increased risk of alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes compared to those who start at age 21. In Louisiana, excessive drinking remains a serious concern, with the state ranking second in the nation—22% of residents, or more than 1.02 million people, report excessive alcohol consumption. In recognition of these challenges, Governor Landry has proclaimed April 2026 as Alcohol Awareness Month to encourage awareness, prevention, and community action.
