After my post yesterday about not blocking stimming (or saying "quiet hands") - I know some people felt called out.

It's hard to hear that what we are doing can be harmful when everything we do is well meaning. I've blocked stims and said quiet hands before. I've said things even publicly on here to you all that I look back on and I'm like 😬🤦🏼‍♀️ - but this is how we learn. It's not "this is how I've always done it", it's "this is how I did it in the past but now that I have new information, I can DO BETTER."

Just like you wouldn't want a doctor preforming a 15 year old procedure on you when there's new information available- we aren't doing things they way we learned in school. We are learning, growing, and changing! 🌈♾❤️

Gospel.

Tearing a child down or making them feel like a failure will never make them better at something.

Building skills and increasing their confidence should be the goal.

Children need to be taught what is right and what is wrong, but they don't need to be hurt in the process. Punishment and discipline have too often been used as interchangeable terms but really they are polar opposites. Punishment is causing deliberate harm as a retribution. Or in other words, making something bad happen to someone as a way to make them "pay" for what they did. Discipline is teaching and directing your child to understand and take responsibility for their actions.

Crossing the midline plays a part in everything we do! Reading, writing, catching a ball, getting dressed, sitting cross-cross-applesauce, play, self-care...everything!

So, what exactly is midline? Midline of the body is an imaginary line that drops from the middle of the head, strait down over the nose, to the belly button and divides the body into left and right sides. Examples of crossing midline include:
👈Moving the left hand/arm/foot/leg across this line to the right side (and vise versa). Twisting the body in rotation around this imaginary line
👉Leaning the upper or body across the middle of the body
👈Touching the opposite side of the page when reading, writing, or cutting.
👉SO much more!

Here are fun ways to address and develop this skill:

Parents we need to STOP making apologies for our children acting like human beings. We are too hard on ourselves and our children. Give yourself and your child grace to be human.

We understand that the vast majority of people with disabilities never have the experience of independently riding a conventional two-wheel bicycle during their lifetime. Research shows that over 80% of people with Autism and 90% of people with Down syndrome never experience this thrill. Defying the...
