In these times of social isolation a concern for our families is how to care for a loved one with dementia. The article comes from the BBC and thought to share.
As a memory care professional, I will encourage our families to make a strict routine for your day. Balance by getting up at the same time every morning, eating, taking short naps (no longer then 45-60 minutes) and going to bed in the evening, keeping it consitant. Our folks with dementia thrive on routine and keeping busy, most..feeling purposeful.
Much more activity during the day will equate to a better night sleep..which individuals with dementia need. Reset the Circadian rhythms, wash away the toxins and brain overload of the day!
It is a tough balance but try to engage your loved one with familiar activities, and household chores, focusing on their life story. Find activities they like to do but scale it back to have short intervals, providing social, mental physical and spirited fun. Laughter music, arts, social engagement and most of all, Exercise...is the best medicine! It can ward off depression, pump the blood to the brain and raise your feel-good chemicals, warding off boredom and depression!
