What It Took to Bring Nurse-Placed Central Lines to SC: A behind-the-scenes look at the data, advocacy, and nursing leadership that changed patient care
History was made in South Carolina, not in an operating room, but at the bedside... by a Vascular Access specialist RN who refused to accept delays in patient care as just the way it is.
Whitney Page, RN, BSN, VA-BC, led a multi-year effort to expand the scope of practice for registered nurses in South Carolina, successfully petitioning the Board of Nursing to allow nurse-placed small-bore internal jugular central lines.
She didn’t just advocate... she built the case: gathering data, securing support from more than 50 providers, engaging board members, and demonstrating that specialty-trained nurses can place advanced central lines safely and effectively.
With 12 years of nursing experience and nearly six years dedicated to vascular access, Whitney brought both credibility and compassion to the table. Trained in advanced central lines across multiple states, she had seen firsthand how bedside placement saves time, reduces infection risk, and prevents patients from enduring unnecessary transfers and delays.
When the advisory was issued, Whitney became the first registered nurse in South Carolina to place a central line at the bedside... a milestone achieved through years of training, advocacy, and leadership. This is what empowered, specialty-trained nurses can accomplish when patient care comes first.
