As a nurse, I don’t ask “What’s the diagnosis?” first.
I ask, “What’s happening in the body and why?”
In this video, I mention depression and although there are multiple causes, I just wanted to highlight one perspective to show an example of functional/holistic thought processes.
We know that 1) low stomach acid can impact nutrient absorption, 2) Low B12 can affect mood and neurological function, and 3) Some medications, like metformin, can lower B12 levels as a side effect.
So in this video, I talk about well, why is someone on metformin? Are they pre-diabetic, or do they have type 2 DM? What’s going on metabolically? Is food not properly breaking down? Why? Even if you are supplementing, is the b12 being absorbed? We cannot look at “vanity metrics” and say “oh, my b12 range is “normal” so I should feel normal, but yet I still don’t feel optimal”. We have to continue to dig deeper.
This is why I have all of my clients fill out a comprehensive intake form so I can start putting the big picture together. It’s really amazing when you look at what’s going on and then connecting the dots. It’s even more amazing when you begin to heal.
I hope this can provide some insight as to how we begin exploring root causes by assessing the full body system.
💬Have you ever had your nutrients checked? Did you know you can order yourself a “depression vitamin and nutrient deficiency test” from Quest? I urge you to ask your P*P to order it or order it yourself to help understand what’s going on in your body. It’s okay to be in charge of your health and ask questions!
