April 18 is National Exercise Day! Clinicians play a critical role in encouraging patients to become more physically active, yet many simply do not have time or feel equipped to offer in-depth lifestyle change counseling. The OMA has partnered with the Oregon Health Authority to create a toolkit with resources to help you empower your patients to increase their physical activity:

Black Maternal Health Week celebrates the leadership and expertise of Black community-based organizations as the foundation for advancing equity and ensuring transformative, sustainable improvements in Black Maternal Health. This year’s theme is “Rooted in Justice and Joy.”

OMA policy on Maternal Mortality and Morbidity as a Public Health Crisis supports advocating for legislation to improve maternal health during and after pregnancy, with a focus on Black, American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN), and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) maternal health.

A message for your patients from Rethink the Drink in collaboration with the Oregon Health Authority:

Alcohol is linked to at least seven types of cancer. The good news is alcohol is a modifiable factor, which means there are actions we can take to reduce our risk. While cancer has many causes, cutting back or choosing not to drink are steps we can take to actively support our health.

The Oregon Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians () and the OMA have been working closely together to monitor the developments at PeaceHealth hospitals in Riverbend, Cottage Grove, and Florence. Over the last several weeks, we have engaged and met with stakeholders to ensure that medical decision-making remains with physicians. We continue to advocate for protecting physician-led care and restoration of clinical autonomy to medical professionals, ensuring that patient care decisions drive medical practice.

In recognition of National Sleep Awareness Month (March), we highlight OMA Vice President Dr. Andrea Matsumura, MD, MS, FACP, FAASM, MSCP, a nationally recognized sleep medicine physician and leading authority in women’s health. Dr. Matsumura is double board-certified in Internal Medicine and Sleep Medicine and a Certified Menopause Practitioner through The Menopause Society.

Dr. Matsumura is spearheading a movement to position sleep as the most powerful and accessible tool for longevity, disease prevention, and performance. “Sleep is the most underutilized intervention in medicine,” she notes. “If we want to improve health outcomes at scale, we have to start there.”
