Clinical case using UBM
An excellent clinical example demonstrating how ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) allows high-resolution visualization of anterior segment anatomy and pathology.
UBM reveals a plateau iris configuration, characterized by flattening of the iris with a normal central anterior chamber depth, along with anterior displacement of the ciliary processes pushing the peripheral iris forward. This anatomical configuration is more commonly observed in women under 50 years of age.
This condition carries a significant risk of acute angle-closure glaucoma and accounts for approximately 10% of all angle-closure glaucoma cases, often leaving long-term sequelae such as relative pupillary block and optic nerve damage, as demonstrated in this case.
🔬 UBM imaging provides critical insight into the underlying mechanism of angle closure, supporting accurate diagnosis, risk stratification, and informed clinical decision-making.
Proud to see Sonomed Escalon UBM technology supporting real-world ophthalmic cases and advanced glaucoma diagnostics.
