Obituary for Lissa Larose Walters

Lissa Larose Walters, a vibrant soul whose free spirit illuminated the lives of those around her, passed away on October 30, 2025, in Vass, North Carolina. Born on February 16, 1962, in Dillon, South Carolina, Lissa lived a life of adventure, love, and unyielding spirit, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished forever.

A funeral service will be 2pm on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at First Baptist Church in Lake View, SC. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at 1pm in the Church sanctuary. Burial will follow the service at Floyd's Memorial Cemetery in Fairmont, NC.

Lissa was a devoted daughter of Charles Lynn Walters and Rosa Lee Bass, who preceded her in death. She is remembered with love by her surviving family, which includes the love of her life, Hugo Olguin, with whom she shared a deep and unwavering bond. Though they never married, their connection was a vibrant testament to love that transcends conventional labels. Lissa often played hard to get, but Hugo was undoubtedly the love of her life.

Lissa is survived by her daughters, Crystal Walters and her son-in-lawTerrell Bethea, Barbara Lawson, Teresa Morales and Anna Sampson. She also leaves behind her beloved son William Lawson and daughter-in-law Tina Lawson, along with her cherished sons Isidro Lopez, Julio Deleon Ruiz Jr, and Jonny Mack Baker Jr.. Lissa’s heart swelled with pride for her grandchildren: Deana Molina-Perez and wife Nora Molina-Perez, Jordan Riggsbee and soon to be wife Brooke Morrison , Kaylie Lawson, Adrianna Lawson, Addison Perez, Amanda Lawson, Alyssia Santiago, Makenzie Lawson, Jayden Bethea, Luis Vera and Jonathon Vera. She was also blessed with great-grandchildren Oaklynn Locklear and Blaire Riggsbee, and soon-to-be-born Kamdyn and Kaiden Morris, and Harper Flinchum. She also leaves behind her beloved brother Charles Ray Walters jr. and many loved aunts, cousins, and dear friends. Each of these beautiful souls carry a piece of Lissa’s spirit within them.

Lissa was a woman who embraced life with boldness and an endless love for her family. Her laughter, light, and warmth filled every room she entered, and she had a remarkable way of making anyone feel at home in her presence. A free spirit to her core, Lissa chose happiness and authenticity above all else. Her most cherished title was that of "Nana," a role she played with unparalleled joy. She adored spoiling her grandchildren and took them on countless adventures, always ensuring she was there for special occasions and ready to slip them a few dollars. The memories created during these times will forever be treasured by her family.

In addition to her parents, Lissa was preceded in death by her baby sister, brother Ricky Lynn Walter’s, her Uncle Gary, and two precious grandchildren, Alexander Emanuel Perez and Payton Elizabeth Lawson. The loss of these loved ones weighed heavily on her heart, but she carried their memories with her throughout her life.

Although she may no longer be with us in body, her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.

As we say goodbye to Lissa Larose Walters, we celebrate a life lived fully and unapologetically. Her legacy of love, laughter, and adventure will continue to inspire those she leaves behind. Rest in peace, dear Lissa; you will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.

Obituary for Wanda Carol Mercer (October 24, 1950 – September 19, 2024)

Wanda Carol Mercer, known as “Mercer”, was born and raised in Lake View, SC where she was an outstanding high school athlete and cheerleader. She attended the University of SC Florence and graduated from Francis Marion College in 1973. Mercer lettered in Tennis, the only women’s sport at the time, was the statistician for the Men’s Basketball Team and a member of the campus newspaper staff and student government association.

A graveside service will be Friday, October 25, 2024, at 2:00 pm at Lake View Cemetery.

Mercer dedicated 33 years to the students of Darlington High Schools where she taught Social Studies and coached the Girls Tennis Team. She cared deeply for her students who appreciated her “up front” teaching and disciplinary style. You always knew where you stood with Mercer whether teaching, coaching or umpiring. Her compassion extended to the community organizing a very successful, now 46 year, student food drive for shut-ins each Christmas, serving thousands over the years. Always the teacher, she said that the students benefited as much as the recipients from the program.
While working for the City of Florence Recreation Department in the summers Mercer helped organize the very successful Girls Softball program and honed her umpiring skills rising to the top of that profession as well. Her 33 year umpiring career began as chief umpire for Friendship Park in Florence advancing to 12 National Youth Tournament assignments including a 1991 tour to Russia and Sweden to introduce youth softball to those countries. She was also selected to umpire 16 men’s, women’s, and co-ed National tournaments including the 1991 and 1998 Women’s World Series. For her accomplishments, Mercer was the first umpire ever elected to the USSSA Softball Hall of Fame.

Mercer was an avid Clemson fan and a perfectionist in all that she tackled, playing tournament golf, just for fun. Retiring to Lake Marion in 2010, she was always surrounded by a variety of friends and acquaintances. Mercer was just as comfortable mentoring young people as she was at the local watering hole or card table. If dynamite comes in small packages, Mercer was TNT. She was funny and loved to laugh. Beneath that gruff exterior was the softest heart and touch imaginable. Whether a stray dog or stray kid, no one was marginalized when Merc was around. Fiercely loyal, if you were her friend, you were her friend for life.

Mercer was predeceased by her parents Ed Mercer and Alice Leggett Mercer Worsham and half-brother Steven Worsham. She is survived by her sisters, Paula Mercer Entwistle and Debra Mercer and nephew Robbie Riley. In lieu of flowers, Mercer would prefer donations to TLC (The Lord’s Table) of Darlington, the Clarendon County Humane Society or your favorite charity.
