This week in our Healing Through Their Minds series, we’re reflecting on Paul Rhoades from the television show Shrinking. Paul has always relied on honesty, intellect, and emotional distance to stay steady. For a long time, those traits helped him feel grounded and in control. As life begins to change, he’s forced to confront how isolating that approach can become.

Paul’s story invites reflection on what happens when strength is built around independence alone. His growth isn’t about becoming someone new, but about letting others meet him where he is. By allowing care, connection, and truth to coexist, Paul shows that vulnerability doesn’t take strength away. It deepens it.

Trying to focus can be surprisingly hard when your mind is already carrying stress, anxiety, or mental overload. Intrusive thoughts can pop up unexpectedly- especially when we’re tired or overwhelmed. Having them doesn’t mean you agree with them or want them; it simply means your brain is trying to process a lot at once.

Noticing these thoughts without judgment and gently redirecting your attention can help bring your focus back.

Therapy can change how we interpret relationships.
Instead of taking everything personally, we may begin to recognize patterns, boundaries, and emotional responses more clearly.

When other people’s behavior starts to make more sense, it often brings clarity—not excuses—and helps us respond with intention rather than reaction.

If Sunday evenings come with a tight chest, racing thoughts, or a sense of dread- you’re not alone. The “Sunday Scaries” can show up when work, school, responsibilities, or expectations start to feel overwhelming.

Noticing the feeling, naming it, and giving yourself permission to slow down can help ease the transition into the week ahead.

In week three of our On Being Human series, we’re honored to share this powerful poem by Alex Madsen!
