A functional family is one in which parents strive to create an environment where everyone feels safe and respected. Parents in a functional family work together to provide structure and stability for their children. They readily address misbehaviors and encourage their children to express their feelings openly and work through disagreements constructively.

On the other hand, a dysfunctional family is characterized by quarrels, grudges, and estrangement. Dysfunctional families often communicate through put-downs and criticisms instead of open dialogue.

Negative emotions like anger, resentment, and fear are common in dysfunctional households. Sometimes a single member's destructive behavior can cause dysfunction within the entire family unit. For instance, a parent who doesn't hold themself accountable or demands support but doesn't offer it.

It's important to remember that no family is perfect, and each has its own unique set of members and challenges. But left unaddressed, the impact of a dysfunctional or emotionally destructive household can carry through generations.

A therapist can help families work and come together as a team by helping each member see the bigger picture of how one individual can impact the entire family system.

The truth is even less typical or "ideal" households, such as those marked by single-parent homes or blended families, can also live in harmony.

And while complicated dynamics can lead to greater obstacles, no matter what a family looks like, a well-functioning family system can mean the difference between a household that radiates positivity and one marked by perpetuating conflict.

Most of us are familiar with the typical American family dynamic. We grew up watching shows like The Brady Bunchand Leave It to Beaver, depicting the image of families living "happily ever after."

However, a closer look at these ideal families and their dynamics, sitcom or reality, typically depicts members and family units that are ultimately happier and healthier because they work to overcome conflict and communicate with each other.

The obsessions and compulsions of OCD can be extremely distressing and time-consuming, interfering with daily life, work, and relationships. For instance, people with OCD might risk losing their job if they are persistently late due to checking the locks on their doors 20 times before leaving the house.

The good news is that OCD is treatable. Behavioral therapy such as Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is the most effective treatment for OCD. ERP involves gradually exposing oneself to anxiety-provoking thoughts, feelings, or situations while learning to resist compulsions. A therapist can help develop a treatment plan and support you as you manage your OCD.

OCD isn't the same as perfectionist tendencies or a preference for cleanliness and order. The obsessions and compulsions that characterize this anxiety disorder can be extremely disabling for those who struggle with it.

Obsessions are the first symptom of OCD and are defined as persistent, intrusive, unwanted thoughts, impulses, or images. These thoughts can be about anything that causes anxiety but are typically related to themes such as contamination, germs, dirt, harm, or orderliness.

Compulsions are the second symptom of OCD and are defined as repetitive behaviors or mental acts that a person feels driven to perform in an attempt to relieve anxiety or discomfort caused by obsessions. Common compulsions include excessive cleaning, checking things, ordering, and needing reassurance.

People with OCD often have both obsessions and compulsions. For example, someone who fears contamination may wash their hands excessively or avoid touching door handles.

We all have quirks and habits, but for some people, their so-called "quirks" can become excessive and destructive.

OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder) is often misunderstood or mistaken for a preference for tidiness. And if we stick to cleanliness as an example, someone with OCD may be excessively organized. However, this obsession may be fueled by an excessive concern with things being symmetrical or in order.

OCD isn't the same as perfectionist tendencies or a preference for cleanliness and order. The obsessions and compulsions that characterize this anxiety disorder can be extremely disabling for those who struggle with it.

There are many reasons relationships fail, both in the short and long term. In the short term, a lack of communication, different expectations, or incompatible lifestyles can lead to trouble. In the long term, unresolved conflict, different values, or growing apart can be relationship enders.

For many couples, infidelity is the first and last straw, regardless of how long they've been together.

So, what does a healthy romantic relationship look like? Many different ingredients make up a healthy relationship, but some key components include:

Open communication: being able to talk openly with each other about your thoughts, feelings, and s*x

Be affectionate. showing love and intimacy through physical touch

Mutual respect: treating each other with kindness, respect, and consideration

No matter the specific life transition, major life changes can be quite disruptive, leaving people feeling overwhelmed, anxious, and unable to cope with their new circumstances.

Change is a fact of life, and it's how we choose to approach and respond to life changes that determine our overall well-being. In most instances, change is a beneficial experience for our self-development, and often we can find ways to make the most of this transition period.

If you find yourself struggling to cope with change, it may be time to seek out the help of a therapist. A therapist can help you explore your feelings about change and teach you coping strategies to make future changes easier to deal with.

In some cases, it may even be helpful to meet with a therapist before any major changes occur in your life. Therapy can help you prepare for whatever comes your way and build the skills you need to face change head-on.
