A functional family is one in which parents strive to create an environment where everyone feels safe and respected. Parents in a functional family work together to provide structure and stability for their children. They readily address misbehaviors and encourage their children to express their feelings openly and work through disagreements constructively.
On the other hand, a dysfunctional family is characterized by quarrels, grudges, and estrangement. Dysfunctional families often communicate through put-downs and criticisms instead of open dialogue.
Negative emotions like anger, resentment, and fear are common in dysfunctional households. Sometimes a single member's destructive behavior can cause dysfunction within the entire family unit. For instance, a parent who doesn't hold themself accountable or demands support but doesn't offer it.
It's important to remember that no family is perfect, and each has its own unique set of members and challenges. But left unaddressed, the impact of a dysfunctional or emotionally destructive household can carry through generations.
A therapist can help families work and come together as a team by helping each member see the bigger picture of how one individual can impact the entire family system.
