Vision and visual processing are not the same 👀

A child may have 20/20 eyesight and still demonstrate difficulty with visual perceptual skills—the brain’s ability to interpret, organize, and make meaning of what is seen 🧠

These skills are essential for:
⭐ Recognizing and forming letters ✏️
⭐ Maintaining spacing and alignment in handwriting 📄
⭐ Tracking during reading 📚
⭐ Interpreting visual information in the environment 👀

When visual processing is inefficient, everyday tasks can feel significantly more effortful—even when vision itself is intact.

Understanding this distinction allows for more targeted support and more effective intervention ✨

⏰ Spring Forward Into Big Feelings

The time change doesn’t just affect adults. Losing an hour of sleep can take time for kids to adjust to and can make emotional regulation harder. You may notice more meltdowns, frustration, difficulty with transitions, or trouble focusing this week.

Here are a few simple strategies that can help children regulate:

🌬 Balloon Breathing – slow deep breaths to calm the body
💪 Wall Pushes – heavy work to help organize the nervous system
🚶 Movement Breaks – movement to release energy and reset the body
🧸 Calm Corner – a quiet space where kids can regain control when emotions feel big

Small supports like these can make a big difference while children adjust to the time change.

Occupational therapy supports children in developing the tools they need for emotional regulation and everyday success.

Screens aren’t the problem — but over-reliance can be.

The American Academy of Pediatrics encourages families to focus less on strict time limits and more on the 5 C’s of media use:

🌟Child – How does your individual child respond to screen time?
🌟Content – Is it high-quality and age-appropriate?
🌟Calm – Is screen time becoming the primary coping strategy?
🌟Crowding Out – Is it replacing sleep, play, movement, or family interaction?
🌟Communication – Are adults engaging and talking about what children are watching?

Children build social, motor, emotional, and problem-solving skills through movement, play, and real-world interaction.

At Little Leaps Therapy, we prioritize hands-on play, connection, and skill-building that supports healthy development beyond the screen.

Most people learn there are 5 senses.

But there are actually 8 sensory systems — and they all impact how your child learns, plays, and regulates.
In addition to sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch, we also have:

✨ Vestibular – movement & balance
✨ Proprioception – body awareness
✨ Interoception – internal body signals (hunger, bathroom needs, emotions)

When these systems aren’t processing efficiently, you might notice:
• Big reactions to small problems
• Constant movement or crashing
• Difficulty sitting still
• Picky eating
• Trouble with coordination

Sensory processing affects more than most people realize.

If you have concerns about your child’s sensory development, early support can make a big difference.
Little Leaps Therapy provides individualized, in-home pediatric occupational therapy.

This simple “break the ice” activity only takes a few ingredients:

💧 Water
🔵 Blue food coloring
🌽 Cornstarch
🧼 Dish soap
🪄 Q-tip

When the soap touches the surface, it spreads and “breaks” the top layer — creating a fun visual effect kids love.

But this isn’t just a science experiment 👇

This activity targets:
✔️ Fine motor control (pincer grasp + precision)
✔️ Hand-eye coordination
✔️ Motor planning
✔️ Cause-and-effect understanding
✔️ Sensory exploration

Play is most powerful when it’s purposeful. 💛

Occupational therapy helps children build foundational skills through engaging, meaningful activities — not just worksheets.

📱 Reach out to schedule an evaluation if you have concerns about your child’s fine motor, sensory, or regulation skills.
