Fall hiking is a great way to get cardiovascular exercise while admiring nature’s beauty. But make sure to protect your feet and ankles while you’re on the trail. Poor choice in footwear and lack of conditioning can lead to foot and ankle injuries that will keep you off the trails for some time. Wear the right shoes and socks. Start slow. And listen to your body. If you injure your feet or ankles when out on a hike, contact a foot and ankle surgeon right away. Early treatment can get you back on the trails in no time.

When arthritis affects the ankle joint, it can produce swelling and pain and may eventually result in deformity, loss of joint function and decreased ability to walk. While the most common form of ankle arthritis is osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis can also affect the ankle. Symptoms include pain and stiffness in the joint, swelling in or near the joint and difficulty walking or bending the joint. If you have these persistent symptoms, see a foot and ankle surgeon for help.

Yes, Medicare does cover treatment of foot conditions like thick nails and so do many other insurance plans, give us a call today!

Toenails will often become thick as you age. Thickening may also occur as a result of trauma to the toenail, like repeatedly rubbing against a shoe. Sometimes when something is dropped on the toenail, the nail will fall off. When a new toenail grows back, it will often be thicker. Nail fungus (onychomycosis), psoriasis and hypothyroidism are also causes. If you have problems with thick toenails, consult a foot and ankle surgeon for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Changes in diet, including overindulging in certain foods and beverages, can cause gout attacks this time of year. Gout attacks are extremely painful and are caused when uric acid accumulates in the tissues or a joint and crystallizes. This most commonly occurs in the big toe joint. If you’re prone to gout attacks avoid purine-rich items like shellfish, organ meats, red meat, red wine and beer. Gout can be treated with medications, diet changes, increasing consumption of appropriate fluids and elevating and immobilizing the foot.
