There is an unparalleled power in connecting with someone who has walked the same difficult path and successfully navigated the journey of recovery. Recovery Support Specialists utilize their own lived experiences to build deep trust, shatter stigma, and provide practical, empathetic guidance to those fighting for their sobriety. TAAP champions these vital peer professionals, advocating for their recognition, fair compensation, and continued integration into comprehensive treatment models.
While treatment is crucial, the proactive work of prevention specialists is the foundation of a healthy, resilient community. By educating youth, identifying early risk factors, and implementing community-wide strategies, these professionals alter the trajectory of countless lives before substance abuse takes root. TAAP proudly supports the dedicated individuals working upstream to protect our communities, providing them with the network and tools necessary to maximize their impact.
The science of addiction and the strategies for effective recovery are constantly evolving, meaning ongoing education is critical for those working in the field. Equipping yourself with the latest evidence-based practices, ethical guidelines, and innovative therapeutic techniques directly translates to better care for individuals struggling with substance use. Through targeted workshops, seminars, and resources, TAAP ensures that every professional has access to the continuing education they need to thrive.

TAAP organizes and establishes local chapters in Texas and assists in stabilizing and increasing their membership and is a confederation of prevention specialists, counselors, recovery support specialists, and other persons who have a direct interest in the field of addiction prevention, treatment and recovery. While many of our members are professionals dedicated to issues related to substance use, some of our members serve those who suffer from other addictions as well.
United, we have a voice in important and critical matters relating to our association and profession, as well as those we serve. This unity enhances our capability as individuals and gives us strength in professional matters. Through a united effort, we are more likely to be recognized in legislative arenas. Together we can work in partnership with state and federal agencies that regulate our industry, and we can promote public policy that will help us meet our goals.
Legislative Advocacy: Our highest priority is advocacy for the prevention, intervention, and treatment of addiction. This goal is accomplished through prudent ex*****on of personal and corporate advocacy efforts at local, state and national levels. The expertise, integrity, and commitment of our association management firm and the staff of our national affiliate lead advocacy efforts. Advocacy includes monitoring regulatory agencies at state and federal levels.
Professional Growth Opportunities: To provide for our members the means to participate in discussions regarding prevention, intervention, and treatment efforts at the national and international levels through affiliation with NAADAC, the National Association for Addiction Professionals, and with IC&RC, the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium.
Academic Growth Opportunities: To provide our members with up-to-date postings on the association website and through email regarding opportunities for academic advancement. To network with faculty at academic institutions that offer coursework in addiction sciences to advocate for broader curriculum, distance learning, and advanced degrees in addiction sciences.
Business Growth Opportunities: To promote expanded opportunities for our members to establish and maintain addiction-related businesses, such as private practice or continuing education providers by providing professional networking opportunities, technical assistance, and web-based referral service.
Peer Assistance: To provide a mentoring and support program for substance abuse counselors who live or work in the State of Texas. While assisting impaired professionals to recover and return to the profession is of paramount concern, support is also provided to counselor interns, those counselors who are isolated or who work in geographically remote areas, and for counselors who are in need of mentoring to elevate standards of practice to acceptable levels.
Ethical Standards: To develop, maintain and enforce a Code of Ethics for our members that reflect the highest standards of conduct for our profession. To advocate with state and federal regulatory agencies for the inclusion of these standards of laws, and regulations.
