Last weekend I went skiing and did what I always do โ€” straight to the double blacks.

No warm-up runs.
Just straight to the steep stuff.

The first run was brutal.

My legs were screaming.
My skis felt unstable.
My turns felt sloppy.

At the bottom I caught myself thinking something I didnโ€™t like:

Am I too old for this now?

But after a few calmer runs the truth became obvious.

It wasnโ€™t age.

It was skill.

For years Iโ€™d relied on strength and fearlessness to get down the mountain.

Eventually brute force stops working.

And thatโ€™s exactly what I see with fitness.

Most adults donโ€™t need more effort.

Thatโ€™s not a discipline problem.

After 40, metabolism is largely driven by skeletal muscle mass.

If you diet aggressively or do too much cardio, you lose the exact tissue that keeps you lean.

So the cycle repeats.
