Overdose Deaths from Drugs Reached Record High
CDC recently reported that drug overdose in the United States rose by almost 30% in 2020
"Overdose deaths from synthetic opioids (primarily fentanyl) and psychostimulants such as methamphetamine also increased in 2020 compared to 2019. Co***ne deaths also increased in 2020, as did deaths from natural and semi-synthetic opioids (such as prescription pain medication)," the NCHS said in a statement.
"This is the highest number of overdose deaths ever recorded in a 12-month period, and the largest increase since at least 1999," Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), part of the National Institutes of Health, said in a statement.
“These data are chilling. The COVID-19 pandemic created a devastating collision of health crises in America," added Volkow.
What happened was drug users suffered a double whammy: they are in an increased stressful situation, can not see their family and friends, can not go to work, can not exercise in the gym, can not go out to restaurants and bars. Yet they also can not see their therapists, can not go to their support groups, can not see their doctors. These lead to their increasingly turn to drugs and alcohol to relieve their anxiety and depression. And this in turn resulted in increased overdose and increased deaths.
Now we have these wonderful and effective vaccines, hopefully people will utilize them and get protected and gradually resume a semi-normal life.
I really encourage people who use drugs to step out and get help. Addiction is a disease. It is really no different from hypertension or diabetes. People recognize that when you have hypertension or diabetes, you need to take medications to prevent them to do damage to your body. But when they have a drug problem, they think that they can beat it on their own. I wish they are right but the ugly truth is that from my experience dealing people with drug problem, very seldom that they are successful.
However, the good news is that we have medications and therapy that can help people who use drugs to overcome these disadvantages. All you have to do is pick up the phone and call for help.
