I would like to wish everyone a happy and safe Mother’s Day. Today is a day to recognize, acknowledge, and celebrate all mother figures in our lives. It's not just about biological mothers. It's also an opportunity to honor stepmothers, adoptive mothers, foster mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, and other women who have played maternal roles in our lives.
We recognize that this day may bring some complex emotions for some people, such as those who have lost their mothers, struggle with infertility, or have strained relationships with their mothers. A kind word and a little support go a long way for those struggling.
Below are some ways to utilize love languages in honoring Mother’s Day, if the mother in your life is still with you.
- Make something homemade or handmade. Express your love and gratitude through a heartfelt letter or card, highlighting specific memories or qualities you admire about her. Ever since I can remember, my mom has always said this is what she wants. Later on, she’ll get exactly that.
- Spend some quality time with them. Do some activities she loves or have a meaningful conversation with her. Reminisce over old photo albums, you know, the ones with the year stamped in the bottom corner.
- Consider thoughtful gifts that cater to her interests or needs, such as books, jewelry, or something personalized.
- Prepare her favorite meal at home or take her out to her favorite restaurant. Bonus points if you can make the meal from a notecard, where only the ingredients are listed without the measurements.
- Offer to help with tasks or chores she typically handles or has trouble doing herself, giving her a break and showing your appreciation. Tending to her garden, mowing the grass, cleaning, changing light bulbs or air filters, for example.
- If everyone is gathering for brunch or a meal, use it as an opportunity to fill in any gaps with genealogy. You never know what you'll learn. I found out this week that I had a relative named Christopher Columbus.
- Create new memories with her. Go to a park she took you to as a child, or visit a museum. "Mom! Can you take us to the rocket ship park? (aka the old Clague park)
- It would be remiss of me not to mention pampering her with a massage, allowing her to indulge and relax.
If your mother or mother figure has passed, here are some ways to honor their memory.
- Visit her grave, memorial or a place with fond memories for her. Bring her favorite flowers or some mementos that remind you of her.
- Write or read what others have said about them in their online guestbook from their memorial service. Read about the fond memories others have said about them, and add your own.
- Compile photos, letters, and keepsakes in a scrapbook or memory book, preserving her legacy and the moments you shared.
- Make a donation to a cause or charity in her honor, supporting something she cared about or advocated for.
- Plant a tree or garden and dedicate it in her memory, providing a living tribute that symbolizes growth and life.
- Light a candle in her memory and take a moment of reflection to honor her presence in your life.
- Prepare her favorite meal or dessert with loved ones, sharing any notes or substitutions written in the margins of the recipe.
- Write a letter or journal about her in a notebook. This is a great way to express your feelings and memories to her, as a way to communicate your thoughts and emotions. If you format it like a letter, share what’s happening in your life now as if she’ll get the message in a few days.
These are just some ways to honor Mother’s Day. We wish each of you a happy and safe Mother’s Day.
