Well we made it! Winter is officially here and the days will now start getting (excruciatingly slowly) longer again. We're not getting any breaks with the weather so far this year but we Great Lakes folks are used to it. Lake Erie rarely freezes over completely any more, but it came close in this picture from 2015 (Mark Duncan, AP). Happy Winter Solstice! Bundle up out there!

November is Native American Heritage month! Ohio has a rich and troubled history with the many Native American tribes who once lived here. Although they are not officially recognized, many members of these tribes have returned to Ohio. Learn a little more and, this Thursday, maybe give some thought to the original people who named our state, our great lake, and so many of our roads, cities and counties.

In a landmark case in July of 2020, the Supreme Court ruled that about half of Oklahoma is Native American land, a decision that could have major implications for current and future litigation. In another victory for indigenous communities the same year, a judge halted progress on the Dakota Access....

November is National Family Caregivers month! Over 80% of caregivers are family members caring family members. While Hanson Services helps care for our "clients," we are also there to support family, friends, neighbors or whoever is helping to care for that client. It's often a group effort! If you know someone who is a caregiver, remember they are a Caregiver And . . . something else - a mother, father, sibling, full or part time worker, but also maybe a painter, knitter, movie fan, sports fan, love to exercise, love to read and so many other things they may not be able to give as much, or any, time to as they'd like. Help a caregiver find the time or energy to do some of the things they love to do, to take a break and focus on themselves for a bit!

Today is World Kindness Day! The programs and services offered by Lakewood's Division of Aging certainly spread a lot of kindness to our Lakewood community.
